Steve Powers explaining many of his works

In this video from PSFK CONFERENCE NYC, artist Steve Powers takes us through his recent public and private art projects. He explains love-letters to the neighborhoods he painted on the sides of buildings in Brooklyn. He also talks about his one-a-day art “Daily Metaltation” pieces that he paints on 8×10 pieces of metal. When you’re presented with any day you’re presented with a blank slate he says and as an artist its his job to find some form and boundaries and distill his experiences of the day onto that canvas.

Mau Mau

For the last couple of weeks Londoners have been afforded the privilege of seeing Mau Mau’s work displayed in the Westbank Gallery. We caught up with the elusive man for a brief yet insightful Q&A. Here’s what he had to say.

A lot of your work carries political or social undertones, do you feel this is crucial when creating a new piece?
Yeah, I see that the Babylon system wants complete control of the people, corruption is everywhere; in their governments, police, media, environmental destruction, super rich and super poor.
I see certain art and music as the conscious voice of the people that they cant control.

Does this have any relation to the foxes, monkeys and other animals you chose to portray?
I see animal behaviour in humans and human behaviour in animals. We are closer than alot of people think. I like the fox. It’s resourceful, it can adapt and hustle, tresspassing from country to city.

VNA visits Miami….

A couple of weeks ago, I made a quick trip to the beautiful city of Miami. What a place! As expected we had to check out what all the fuss was about over in the Wynwood district (Home to the Wynwood walls and where Primary Flight takes place every year) The whole area is crawling with street art from all the big names which makes for a really nice “treasure hunt” if you like as you drive and walk around the area. Stumbling across 3 pieces by Retna or a huge Os Gemeos collab wall doesnt happen every day so we took full advantage of our visit and this is just a sample of what we saw…
The super talented Anthony Lister…

Huge Retna…

Amazing long wall by Rime…

He Who Dares…

This is an interesting moment for street art in a global context. Undeniably, whether you like the term ‘street art’ or not, it has become a worldwide phenomenon, going from the gutters of suburbia to the walls of millionaires overnight.

As with all underground trends, graffiti got scooped up, rebranded and repackaged to sell to a bigger audience as something a lot tamer. Marketing companies all over the world fought for scraps of authentic cool to help sell their products, some artists gladly gave over their creative talents for the big bucks of the advertisers. And why wouldn’t you?

Now it seems the coin is set to flip again as Australian artist, RJ Williams, sticks it to Madonna for ripping off his artistic copyright. In April this year, Madonna released a new fragrance, ‘Truth or Dare by Madonna’. A great coup for the international pop artist as she brands an entire collection including footwear, handbags and accessories.
