Walls, prints and the people who make them

Privacy

Plain files from one server, with nothing watching who reads them.

How the pages work

Each page on this site is a finished HTML file, sent exactly as it was built. Nothing is tailored to the reader. No cookie is set, no analytics or advertising code runs, and the pages make no requests to any other server, since the type, the styles and everything else load from this domain. There are no comment boxes, sign-up fields or forms of any kind.

The server log

The web server, nginx, writes a line to an access log for every request, which is what it does out of the box. That line holds the IP address the request came from, the date and time, the address asked for, the status code and size of the response, the referring page if your browser sent one, and the user-agent text that names your browser. Requests that fail can also leave a line in the error log, with the IP address.

Both logs are rotated daily under Ubuntu’s standard settings and removed once they are fourteen days old. They are looked at only to keep the server running and to deal with abuse. They are not matched against any other data and not handed to anyone.

Email

Mail sent to the contact page address is used for one thing, which is replying to it. Neither the message nor your address is added to any list or passed on. On request, the whole exchange is deleted.

Your rights

UK and EU data protection law lets you ask what is held about you and have it erased. There are no accounts here, and the logs expire within a fortnight, so in practice the only thing likely to exist is an email thread you started.
