PHANTOM PAIN by YUSK IMAI and DANTE HOROIWA


“During one of our many discussions in the studio, we came across a hidden sensation, something that is always present, yet its causes or even the meaning of its existence still felt very abstract, but we agreed in describing it as a dull but constant pain.

This is our attempt to interpret this well of abstract sensations, and during this process we hit many notes, but one in particular kept showing up over and over for both of us, death. Maybe the fear of it, maybe what it leaves behind for the living, whatever it is, it exists.

This phantom pain keeps us going, fuelling our actions in life, always present, like gravity flowing through us and all things, always wise, reminding us, ironically, that everything is impermanent.

We hope that you may welcome this pain with warmth, and that it may feel less abstract now, as it does for us, through our exhibition Phantom Pain at Backwoods Gallery from June 8th to June 24th 2018.”

YUSK IMAI

Yusk Imai is a contemporary artist who was born in the U.S.A. in 1982, to a Japanese descendent family. At the age of 6 months his family migrated to São Paulo where he currently lives and works.

Since 2007, Yusk has exhibited extensively within galleries, at art fairs and on the street across Europe, U.S.A., Australia and South America. The flat perspectives and dramatic curves demonstrated in Imai’s work is reminiscent of Art Nouveau greats such as Gustav Klimt.

Imai’s paintings and drawings lure us into state of self-consciousness and questioning. These ostensibly post-apocalyptic works tread warily between sci-fi apparitions, threatening premonitions and horror stills. Like a séance, they speak to Dali’s technique for creative thinking; a thinking that was founded on the moments in which we begin to fall asleep. When this sleeping pattern is interrupted and we are awoken, we find the subconscious rise to the conscious as a definitive form.

DANTE HOROIWA

Dante Horoiwa is a self-taught contemporary artist who was born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1988, to a Japanese descendent family. Recently, Horoiwa has exhibited his paintings at the El Centenario Museum in Mexico, with further features in United States, South and North American galleries, as well as large scale murals on the streets of East and West Europe.

His work frequently deals with themes closely connected to the foundations of human existence, which are universal to all living beings. Using a placid colour scheme of neutral shades, Horoiwa’s paintings, drawings and murals possess a mysterious, spiritual and soulful tonality. His work delves into the depths of human experience to explore the seen and unseen, using familiar devices such as long hair, textiles, plants and threads to connect the various forms, and evoke our sense of something magical and supernatural.

THE MORTAL DRAMA by YUSK IMAI

‘Life’s absurdity and the inevitability of death are the central themes of The Mortal Drama by Yuske Imai. In 2015, after temporarily relocating studios from Berlin to Sao Paulo, in order to be closer to his family, Yuske found himself confronted by a series of personal tragedies. It’s from within this confrontation that the themes of The Mortal Drama were formed. After staring into the chimeric eyes of existence, life and death, Yuske returned to the canvas, each time, with a visceral and profound message, touched by his experiences. Life is beautiful, it is sad, it gives and it takes and any sense of control might just be an illusion.

The Mortal Drama is an story of existence, told across twelve paintings on canvas, from the most symbolically expressive and profound artists that Backwoods Gallery has been lucky enough to work with. ‘A Study of Darkness’ – Backwoods Gallery

‘A Study Of…’ is a decade long series of exhibitions curated by Backwoods Gallery. The goal of the project is to create a comprehensive archive of artistic studies by some of the world’s leading contemporary artists, covering a wide variety of subjects.

Once completed, the ten year project archive will be published – along with support material such as artist interviews and critical essays. We hope that the archive will become a useful historic document and inspiration for future artists and theorists.

Backwoods Gallery: ‘A Study of Camouflage’

Backwoods Gallery proudly presents ‘A Study of Camouflage’ – a new show within the A Study of… exhibition series. This is the fourth exhibition in row in the long-term project consisting of annual shows that focus on different study subjects.

With this series of exhibitions, Backwoods are creating a vivid archive of works by renowned artists from around the world whose works intersect on the same subject-matter. No matter the artistic style or technique used, a magnificent plurality of different approaches and representations of a single subject contextualises it, and places it in a dominant understanding of both the artists’ and audience’s views. Logically, this library becomes a diverse overview of different representations of a single subject, as seen and created by leading contemporary artists.

A Study of Camouflage brings together some of the leading contemporary artists whose art, in some way, touches the subject of camouflage. The concept seeks to deconstruct the dominant perception of camouflage from its military driven narrative, and to bring back the camouflage patterns to its natural roots. Camouflage is usually linked with military uniforms and inherently with violence and rigorousness. However, camouflage patterns are much more than a simple military feature. Its different forms can be observed and understood as an artistic product, both in terms of aesthetics and conceptuality. Aesthetically, camouflage can assume different shapes and forms, creating beautiful design and art products, while conceptually, it may be detached from its military connotation, and transformed to different purposes depending on the given context. Always depending on artistic approach towards it, camouflage has enormous potentials for being a perfect medium for countless interpretations of contemporary society. The use of camouflage in art may lead to more abstract forms, while on the other hand it can serve as the perfect material for figurative and conceptual approaches as well.

The exhibition will open on Friday, May 29th, and will be on view until Sunday, June 7th. It will take place at a warehouse space, just next door to Backwoods Gallery, at 5 Easey Street, Collingwood.

‘The Genuine Anti-Cool’ – Backwoods Gallery

Backwoods Gallery will be kicking off the 2015 calendar with a huge 5-year retrospective exhibition; ‘The Genuine Anti-Cool’ curated by Sean Carroll and featuring Backwoods artists.

The exhibition will also include some never before seen pieces. Featuring; Shun Kawakami, James Reka, Stabs, Miso, Ghostpatrol, Slicer, TwoOne, Shohei Otomo, Shohei Takasaki, Lush, Fred Fowler, Yusk Imai, Jun Inoue, Stephen Ives and Shida.

‘The Genuine Anti-Cool’ will be a unique insight into the current state of Australia’s maturing street art and urban contemporary scene. Backwoods Gallery will also be using the exhibition to present their latest book, ‘The Genuine Anti-Cool.’

This September, Backwoods Gallery is proud to present ‘A Study of Hair’, the third installment in what is to be a decade-long project.

The 2012 and 2013 exhibitions focused on two of the most important vectors of emotional communication: hands and eyes. This year’s theme, hair, is the most challenging of the series so far, and promises to generate an even more diverse range of interpretations.

This year’s artists will include C215, Dave Kinsey, Faith47, Inkie, Jonathan Guthmann, Mark Bode, Merda, Miso, ROA, Stephen Ives, Shohei Otomo, TwoOne, Usugrow, Yusk Imai and Alexander Mitchell.

In its completed form, the ‘A Study Of…’ project will document over 350 artworks from all corners of the globe. The curator’s (Alexander Mitchell) intent is to create an historical source with enough breadth to contextualize a generation of artists, many of whom work primarily outside the framework of established institutions.
