Laser 3.14 – Interview

Our man in Amsterdam, Hyland Mather of Andenken Gallery, recently caught up with Laser 3.14 for an interview. Remaining anonymous, Laser 3.14 is the pseudonym of a poetic painter, also from Amsterdam. Writing his short socio-critical messages on fences and construction site hoardings all over the world, his pen-name is a reference to his love for Sci-fi. The 3.14 in his name stands for the numerical denomination for Pi, the letters of which also represent an abbreviation for Public Image. As well as working on the streets, he is an exhibiting artist and cartoonist, with a book, ‘Are You Reading Me’, published in 2009.

Here’s Laser’s take on the world…

Martin Whatson Pop-Up Show “Hide And Seek” @ RexRomae, London

Martin_Whatson01

Norwegian stencil artist, Martin Whatson, will be having a solo exhibition with London-based RexRomae gallery from the 6th through the 9th of November at their pop-up location @ 9 Kingsland Rd, London E2 8AA. Only few days before the opening, we got an exclusive look into what Martin was working on for this show in his studio.

Whatson’s recognizable combination of stencil art with graffiti writing and tags paved the way for his work around Europe and America, both through murals, original works and print editions. With his upcoming London show, the artists is exploring the continuous metamorphosis of the city’s ecosystem, through marking the canvas the same way people make their mark on society. Conflicting the symbols of “good” painted with stencils, against “evil” represented through colorful chaotic tags and graffiti, his idea is to show the relationship between right and wrong.

“I feel like my background is more from the fine art world, but I found interest in doing art myself through graffiti so I like to incorporate both. It’s like a fusion of two interests – the fine art and the street art – but I find that the aesthetics of graffiti is my favourite thing, so that’s why I try to incorporate it.”

Along with introducing new works on canvas, created exclusively for this show, Whatson will release a new hand painted print “Climber”, in a limited edition of 50, which will be available in person only at the gallery.
