Vexta – Trading Places

Brush

Vexta is one of the most interesting artists to come out of Australia. She was picked up by some guy called Banksy to feature in his ‘Cans’ Festival and subsequent film, Exit Through The Gift Shop. Recently, while every other wannabe was shamelessly networking at Miami Basel, Vexta was over on the other side of the world, working hard at India’s first Contemporary Art Biennale. Despite some near catastrophic events and a very temperamental internet connection, we managed to connect with her for a few words while she painted…

He Who Dares…

This is an interesting moment for street art in a global context. Undeniably, whether you like the term ‘street art’ or not, it has become a worldwide phenomenon, going from the gutters of suburbia to the walls of millionaires overnight.

As with all underground trends, graffiti got scooped up, rebranded and repackaged to sell to a bigger audience as something a lot tamer. Marketing companies all over the world fought for scraps of authentic cool to help sell their products, some artists gladly gave over their creative talents for the big bucks of the advertisers. And why wouldn’t you?

Now it seems the coin is set to flip again as Australian artist, RJ Williams, sticks it to Madonna for ripping off his artistic copyright. In April this year, Madonna released a new fragrance, ‘Truth or Dare by Madonna’. A great coup for the international pop artist as she brands an entire collection including footwear, handbags and accessories.

United Colours of Bennett

Surry Hills local, Bennett, is pretty young, but already hot property on the Sydney art scene. His punk-inspired paintings and collages are inspired by a skateboarding background and a healthy disrespect for authority. He has a new show opening with Tom Ferson this week, check it.

NeckFace, he is badass!

Vexta

Ahead of her new show in Brisbane, VNA caught up with straight-up from-the-streets artist, Vexta. One of the highest-profile artists in Australia, she has a unique, self-taught style and a DIY attitude. We like her lots.

Vexta, tell us about your new show, what’s it all about?

My next exhibition is called In-Between Worlds, it opens on Thursday April 19th up at Edwina Corlette Gallery in Brisbane, Australia. It’s a collection of new work examining our relationship to ourselves, ideas about evolution, the mysterious interconnectedness of all living things and the atomic particles that hold it all together. It originally spawned from thinking about the way everything, ourselves included, is constructed from tiny particles, the way those atomic particles are clustered and thinking what would happen if they shattered. It’s about what they would look like if we could see them and how if they did shatter, it would be a new world. So, this show is about that possibility. I’ve painted the particles as these geometric neon shards and in the show they are fusing and pulling things apart. The show itself includes paintings, installation, a light sculpture and a sound piece.

E.L.K in the Woods

Archibald Prize nominee, Luke Cornish aka E.L.K, is the first stencil artist to be nominated for the award. Ever. We managed to get a quick interview with him in between his hectic schedule of newspaper interviews, TV appearances and flights between Sydney and Melbourne…

How have you found it since everything blew up?

Everyone wants a piece, it’s very flattering, but it’s very frustrating too.
