The TINYPINK – A New Breed of Stencil Cap

LineUp

The urban art industry seems in a constant state of flux as both innovators and artists themselves push the medium and technique to new heights; to achieve a bigger wall, a brighter colour or, in the case of the all new TINYPINK, a thinner, crisper line. With just two days left on it’s Kickstarter project, the final step aiming to raise the initial production costs for the finished product, we went in for a closer look. Continue Reading →

Smates Paints “A Flamenco in Kyiv” For ArtUnitedUs

smates_1

The ongoing mural project Art United Us recently produced some fresh new public works in Ukrainian capital. One of them is this vibrant piece by Belgian artist Smates, titled “A Flamenco in Kyiv”.
Depicting a pink flamenco bird submerging under water and creating a splash with his image, the mural continues Smates’ series of work that play with underwater effect and hyper-realism. Placed on a wall that used to host billboard advertisements, this work is anexample of what this festival is trying to achieve – battle the abundance of adds in public space by creating fresh work by world’s leading urban and street artists. Along with that the idea of the festival is to raise public awareness and attention to the problem of war, aggression and violence worldwide. With this in mind, the organizers and curators Geo Leros, Iryna Kanishcheva, Waone Interesni Kazki and Ilya Sagaidak are aiming to produce 200 walls over a period of 2 years, starting from Kiev and around the world.

Smates Interview – Five Years On

“Time flies when you’re having fun,” was Bart Smeets’ aka Smates’ reaction when we first told him it had been a whole five years since we last covered him here at VNA. In the meantime he has managed to achieve that closest held dream of every creative mind, to make a living from his love. Although, as he later mentioned, such an achievement has come at a cost. With an interview that was five months in the making, we touched bases with him again after all this time for an update on how things have progressed.

Smates

I’ve recently been shown work by an up-and-coming Belgian graffer Smates and have been keeping tabs on what he’s been up to. This fly with two skulls for a face was put up last week in Neerpede, in the outskirts of the Belgian capital.
