POW! WOW! Hawaii 2016 Recap

Audrey Kawasaki

As we previously informed, Valentine’s day week was once again reserved for the biggest street art festival in the Pacific – POW! WOW! Hawaii 2016. As every year, the event turned Honolulu into world capital of mural making along with tons of side events. Hosting a huge roster of artist from all around Hawaii and around the globe, POW! WOW! once again produced a series of fresh and diverse murals through the Kaka’ako district in Oahu.

From Felipe Pantone’s futuristic looking visual distortions, Audrey Kawasaki’s first outdoor (header image), large size mural, Usugrow or Defer calligraphy based works, Borondo’s expressive piece, Slinkachu miniature beauties, Bicicleta Sem Freio’s colorful explosion or Ekundayo and Andrew Hem’s effective collab, to numerous graffiti based pieces, the 6th edition of the festival was once again a big success.

Olek x POW! WOW! Hawaii

Supported by Anthropologie, Olek created an environmentally and culturally relevant crochet installation for POW! WOW! Hawaii 2015. The crocheted canoe is housed on the front lawn of the Honolulu Art Museum and speaks of marine life, while connecting traditional crochet techniques and Hawaiian canoeing.

POW! WOW! x RVCA – RVCAloha

Every winter the advocates and artists of RVCA gather on the shores of Oahu to skate, surf and paint. Dubbed RVCAloha, the 2014 edition had RVCA and POW! WOW! painting a new mural at the Keolu Skatepark in Kailua, Hawaii. Battling intermittent showers and the harsh Hawaiian sun, Dmote and Soul completed a stunning piece of art complete with volcanoes and cosmic dolphins.

Another awesome POW! WOW! HAWAII! video, this time featuring Kamea Hadar, who came through San Francisco for his recent show at 1AM Gallery. His new work is in collaboration with Defer and titled “Paradise Lost”, which explores their interpretations of paradise. Kamea and Defer first worked together at POW! WOW!
