Mulga the Artist – Interview

We caught up with Aussie artist, Mulga, in the spare time he had between painting walls and filming for MTV, to talk about Gorillas, magic beards and poetry. Here’s some of the stuff we talked about:

VNA: Explain what Mulga is about and tell us a bit about your clothing label…

Mulga: Well Mulga is me, so I am my own brand, you could say. I am an artist from the south of Sydney who likes to paint bearded characters and brightly coloured animals.

Shannon McKinnon

Shannon McKinnon is the boss of Aisle6ix Industries screen-printers, operator of Secret Walls Australia division and an all-round all-Australian legend. He took a little time out of his busy lifestyle to give us the lowdown on his love affair with screen-printing, Australian art and Chilli.

Big Shannie Mac, tell us a little bit about what you do… What’s the crack with Aisle6ix, how did it evolve? And has it always been something you’ve wanted to do?

Aisle6ix Industries developed when I moved to Sydney from Canberra and fell in love with screen-printing. During my studies I met Greg Beer, VNA’s art director, and he and I would come up with designs and I would screen-print them. After four years in Sydney, I moved to London and spent two years working for Photofit, an amazing screen-printing shop just near Old Street tube. It was back-to-basics and an amazing experience. I then moved to Melbourne and worked for Screenplay in Fitzroy then made another move, this time to Sydney, where Aisle6ix Industries really got its roots. So after lots of travel and with a huge amount of support from my girlfriend, Shakira, Aisle6ix Industries is busier than ever.

Red Bull Canvas Cooler Project

Londoners will be familiar with the Red Bull Cooler Canvas Project already, but Sydney-siders better recognise this is actually pretty legit.

Over the next month, big dog Marty Routledge has programmed a line up including artists Beastman, Numskull, Phibs, Roachy, Thomas Jackson, Will Lynes, Esjay, Brent Smith, Well Dressed Vandals, Kerupt and Peque, who will be turning mini Red Bull fridges into works of art, inspired by the look and feel of the bar.

Venues include Oxford Art Factory, Upstairs Beresford, Hunky Dory Social Club (license pending…), Bucket List, Lo Fi, El Loco, The Standard, The Flinders Hotel, The Norfolk Hotel, Cargo Lounge and Sugarmill.

It all kicks off tonight at Lofi – get down early to slurp some Red Bull, apparently it’ll give us wings, so afterwards we can fly to Ching-a-lings…
