POW! WOW! Hawaii 2015 Video Recap

The hardworking crew behind POW! WOW! Hawaii just wrapped up their official recap video for this years event. Showing on wall and behind the walls action by the participating artists, this video captures the essence of this world wide famous festival and its unique vibe. Shot from the ground, cherry pickers and drones, the flick gives an unique chance to see artists such as Doze Green, Strok, Natalia Rak, Case Maclaim, Hot Tea, Fafi, Kevin Lyons and many more, getting their work done under the tropical sun. With artists like Olek, Maya Hayuk or Tristan Eaton talking about their personal experiences and the distinctive atmosphere they experienced during their stay in the paradise, this video is great way to round up another successful edition and start warming up for the next years event.

Olek x POW! WOW! Hawaii

Supported by Anthropologie, Olek created an environmentally and culturally relevant crochet installation for POW! WOW! Hawaii 2015. The crocheted canoe is housed on the front lawn of the Honolulu Art Museum and speaks of marine life, while connecting traditional crochet techniques and Hawaiian canoeing.

Olek – Kiss The Future

Olek recently returned to her mother country, visiting a women’s prison in Poland for an art project involving the residents.

As she says: ‘I made them feel important and useful. I am changing my ticket, staying here longer to spend more time with the Polish ladies. I feel they need it. Or, maybe it is me who need them’

The piece reads ‘pocałunek przyszłość’, or ‘kiss the future’, in Polish.

Here’s a bunch of images from her time there so far, we’ll let the pictures do the talking…

Olek – There Is No Such Thing As Part Freedom – NYC

VNA caught up with NY-based Polish yarn-bomber, Olek as she braved the coldest day of the century (it was literally minus 15ºC) in Manhattan to put up this piece as part of the continuing Little Italy Street Art (L.I.S.A.) Project.

A comparatively short visit to London by Crochet artist Olek for a solo show at Tony’s Gallery turned into a long involuntary stay. Luckily for VNA, photographer and writer NoLionsInEngland was able to get to know Olek well and we are delighted that Olek allowed us to produce an in-depth profile for issue 21 of VNA magazine. The interview is reproduced below and thanks to less space pressure we can provide a greater selection of photographs illustrating the striking visuals and intense colour of Olek’s various art forms.

Flamboyant and colourful, fizzing with energy yet melancholy, Olek the crochet artist sits knees folded sipping a tea outside a Shoreditch cafe. Her skirt rises up her leg revealing an electronic curfew tag, the tangible evidence of Olek’s run-in with the law which is why she has been in London for more than a year. An incident in a bar fending off the unwanted fumblings of a drunk man led to Olek being found guilty in a London court of “Wounding without intent”. From her Spring 2012 solo show at Tony’s Gallery to the charge, the trial and then the sentencing, Olek has been anchored in London as a no-fixed-abode couch nomad for over a year.

VNA Issue 21

VNA issue 21 is here and it’s pretty special being the first to feature a female cover artist; and who better to take this highly coveted position than the queen of street art herself Miss Van.

Her beautiful hand-painted “poupees” and vivid sexual creatures have been capturing the hearts of art lovers and for years and after a brief hiatus from working on the streets, she’s back in full force. We caught up with her to delve a little deeper into the mind of a lady who has blazed a trail through this macho graffiti world.

This issue is bursting with interviews – from the Ever-Fresh crew member Rone, monochromatic illustrative master Joe Fenton and street art new-comer NoseGo. We also have pearls of wisdom from those who have been on the scene since its inception, like Inkie, photographer Alex Fakso and Canadian artist Johnny Crap who also took the time to design our latest subscriber t-shirt . We caught up with a few other influential ladies including graffiti artist Mad-C and stencilist Amanda Marie, as well as illustrative duo Wurstbande from Berlin. There’s also something a bit different from another duo, husband and wife Dal & Faith47 who chose to interview each other. If this wasn’t enough you can also find interviews with queen of crochet, Olek, and the brilliant Nicolas le Borgne, a.k.a Odö – as well as a look at what’s been going on in the streets of London, Detroit and Japan.

VNA 21 will be available with two alternative covers; one is exclusive to our web store and subscribers, while the other will be available through our network of stockists.

As always there is a screen-printed edition of the magazine, with artwork designed by Miss Van, 100 of which will be available at our London launch party alongside a screen-printed envelope and limited edition postcards. 20 of these limited packs will be up for grabs through an online lottery, and 30 will be sent out at random to those purchasing copies of VNA 21 through our website. Keep an eye out on Instragram, FB & Twitter for a sneak peak of these.

To register your interest for our online lottery please email LTD@verynearlyalmost.com before 6pm on 31 January.
