NO AD – Jordan Seiler Interview

Off the back of his awesome bus-shelter keys initiative, PublicAdCampaign, Jordan Seiler is taking back the streets and taking on the ads in the virtual world as well as the physical. Pioneering the way for real-life ad blockers, Jordan has spent years researching and mapping out all the New York subway adverts so they can easily be digitally replaced by a carefully curated selection of art from over 50 (and growing) different international artists. We spoke to him to get the lowdown on his subversive new app: NO AD.

NO AD: NYC

Are you sick of looking at other people’s advertising they force feed you everywhere you turn? Don’t worry, these guys have got you covered, heaps of artwork from over 50 artists to nice up your area at the touch of a screen…

New York is a city of commuters. 5.5 million riders move through its expansive subway system on an average weekday. Advertisers take advantage of this huge, captive audience by bombarding everyone with commercial messages. Over the years, artists have attempted to take back this public space and our attention, but the system remains full of ads. This is why we created NO AD, a mobile app available now for FREE on iOS and Android. NO AD uses augmented reality technology to replace ads with artwork in realtime through your mobile device. The app will work with dozens of common ads and will be updated regularly with new content. Try it with as many ads as possible to discover lots of new art! Turn your commute into a curated art experience with NO AD.
