CMMNTY: Wearable Art That Helps The Homeless

CMMNTY LAUNCHES ETHICAL AND SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE BRAND TO CHAMPION ARTISTS WHILE SUPPORTING HOMELESS PEOPLE

A collective of artists have devised a new global platform for contemporary artisanal merchandise, with every sale ensuring a fair deal for artists whilst helping to support homeless communities.

CMMNTY has been launched to encourage collaboration by bringing a wide variety of artists together to produce limited edition and ethically produced clothing and art together. The new ethical platform is jointly-owned with the artists, meaning that contributors claim a fair share of proceeds each time one of their products is sold. Wear it or hang it, every print is super exclusive and limited. Not only that, but five per cent of profits on each CMMNTY sale will be donated to homeless charity Emmaus, which supports people who have experienced homelessness by providing them with a home and meaningful work in a community setting.

CMMNTY has a rich background and long history. Initiated by established fashion design and art professionals with real streetwear credentials and thousands of hours of experience in the industry, the idea is to do things differently and give something back. David Newman, CMMNTY’s founder, said: “Unlike many brands, artists don’t just license their designs to CMMNTY; they are CMMNTY. Jointly-owned with artists, CMMNTY’s aim is to use products to promote art rather than art to promote products. It’s a model that means a fairer deal for artists, whilst also ensuring we do our bit to address the important issue of homelessness.”

He also adds: “As well as being an ethical platform, CMMNTY offers products that reflect the attention-to-detail, cut and construction that we pride ourselves on. Each product is strictly limited edition, designed by the artists and made to order by the CMMNTY team. This means that everything we sell is a truly collectible piece-of-art.” The artist roster have all earned their stripes worldwide and include true forefathers of street art such as; David Walker, sheOne, Will Barras & Ornamental Conifer as well as other participating artists; Mr Penfold and Mr Incognito.

Further underlining the ethical philosophy of CMMNTY, every art print is produced using Vegan-friendly bamboo paper, while t-shirts feature organic, long fibre, triple washed Portwood Cotton™.

CMMNTY’s official Kickstarter campaign will launch on 8th February with an exclusive film explaining the project in further detail and encouraging people to support the vision. GCASFM – Book Fundraiser

GIVE CROHN’S A SLAP FROM ME (GCASFM) is a collaborative project founded by Matt
Strutt aka Cheffo31, to raise awareness of Crohn’s disease, with the help of some of the world’s most prolific graffiti artists, street artists and illustrators. Armed with a stack of 2000 USPS labels for artists to draw on, our aim is to turn these artistic interpretations of the title Give Crohn’s A Slap From Me, into a limited edition book
which will raise money for Crohn’s & Colitis UK. With new team members on board, designers Moose & Yeti, Andre Leitão and Joana Morgado, ex-VNA writer Ro Elfberg and media whizz Jack Shearring, the project is stronger than ever. Over 70 artists are now involved, we have a successful live art event under our belt and growing coverage of the project, we’re already slapping Crohn’s left, right and centre.. and we’ve only just begun.

Our much-celebrated cover is from Japanese-American artist Audrey Kawasaki. A firm favourite of ours for a long time, she blends together a beautiful mix of delicate female forms with a dark manga influence. Incorporating Art Nouveau-inspired pattern work, wood grain and soft colours with subtly tortuous and erotic undertones her exotic hyperrealism is otherworldly.

This issue’s Diggin’ In The Crates sees the return of the hugely talented Jeff Soto to give us the rundown on some of the highlights of his extensive career and some of the directions he has explored over the course of his professional life.

Cute French couple Ella & Pitr give us a glimpse of their amazing partnership of eight years, showing how they double up on their creativity, travelling worldwide to paint while still holding it down as parents.

Dipping deep into the Antipodean pond, we look at the amazing, huge murals of Aussie, Fintan Magee and look through the refined lens of Nicole Reed’s camera. While we’re out that way we also hunker down with New Zealander Askew to chat about Pacific Island life and world politics.

Our main men in London, photographers Claude Crommelin, Mark Rigney of Hookedblog, NoLionsInEngland, and Paul Gray stomp the streets of London to find the finest examples of art in the streets, while Paul Green covers the Bristol scene to shine a light on the West Country.

The regular Instagram feature throws a spotlight on the slick snaps of Australian photographer, p1xels, with a nice mix of urban exploring, graffiti, architecture, inside and outside art and street scenes.

Mr Penfold holds it down for the UK, with his cartoon-style and colours as he gains confidence in his abstract illustrations. Also from the UK, we have fine pencil work from Steph Morris, getting freaky over sneakers as she shares her obsession.

Repping it hard for the girls, Polish painter Natalia Rak demonstrates her enviable skills across multiple mediums, from canvas to concrete.

We go through the looking glass to view art from the other side with Patrick Hull of Chicago-based Vertical Gallery in our Gallery Talk feature. Staying in the US, we also have man of the land, Spencer Keeton Cunningham, with his blend of skate styles and doodled motifs. And last but not least, heading further north, we check in with Canadian Sandra Chevrier and her awesome mix of comic book and photorealistic portraiture.

Analogue/Digital – Melbourne – 17 May

A/D Day 2 began with Feature Artists: CJ Hendry, Mr. Penfold and Meggs – I was admittedly pretty keen to see this, particularly  as it was the first time I had had an opportunity to hear Meggs speak after his relocation to San Francisco.  This session complemented the Next Gen session of yesterday – allowing creatives to learn what can come of hard work, sacrifice and following your dreams.  These talks would have provided food for thought for a number if people in the room – CJ Hendry sold her entire wardrobe to have 12 months off work, study, everything, to pursue her dream.  Now, she is killing it with a US show scheduled for later this year and sell out shows here in Australia.

Analogue/Digital – Melbourne – 16 May 2014

Analogue/Digital is a two day event featuring 6 sessions, 15 presenters, a world class gallery show, a fully sponsored after party (18+) and a epic line up of artists, designers, creatives, next generation leaders and three amazing company founders.

Each presentation is projected in HD onto one of Melbourne’s biggest screens with full Dolby 7.1 Audio.

Having never been to anything like this before, I approached the event with great trepidation.  What is it going to be like?  I don’t know anyone…  What do I do?  Where do I sit?  But, in a typical fashon that I have come to expect from the art community in Australia, I was welcomed with open arms (literally!) when I hit the awesome Mr. Penfold show held at the Just Another Project Space in Prahan.
