Backwoods Gallery: ‘A Study of Camouflage’

A-STUDY-OF-CAMO-PROMO

Backwoods Gallery proudly presents ‘A Study of Camouflage’ – a new show within the A Study of… exhibition series. This is the fourth exhibition in row in the long-term project consisting of annual shows that focus on different study subjects.

With this series of exhibitions, Backwoods are creating a vivid archive of works by renowned artists from around the world whose works intersect on the same subject-matter. No matter the artistic style or technique used, a magnificent plurality of different approaches and representations of a single subject contextualises it, and places it in a dominant understanding of both the artists’ and audience’s views. Logically, this library becomes a diverse overview of different representations of a single subject, as seen and created by leading contemporary artists.

A Study of Camouflage brings together some of the leading contemporary artists whose art, in some way, touches the subject of camouflage. The concept seeks to deconstruct the dominant perception of camouflage from its military driven narrative, and to bring back the camouflage patterns to its natural roots. Camouflage is usually linked with military uniforms and inherently with violence and rigorousness. However, camouflage patterns are much more than a simple military feature. Its different forms can be observed and understood as an artistic product, both in terms of aesthetics and conceptuality. Aesthetically, camouflage can assume different shapes and forms, creating beautiful design and art products, while conceptually, it may be detached from its military connotation, and transformed to different purposes depending on the given context. Always depending on artistic approach towards it, camouflage has enormous potentials for being a perfect medium for countless interpretations of contemporary society. The use of camouflage in art may lead to more abstract forms, while on the other hand it can serve as the perfect material for figurative and conceptual approaches as well.

The exhibition will open on Friday, May 29th, and will be on view until Sunday, June 7th. It will take place at a warehouse space, just next door to Backwoods Gallery, at 5 Easey Street, Collingwood.

Rewire – Art x Audio – Exhibition & Kickstarter

For 60+ years art has adorned the sleeves of records, a visual expression of what’s inside, but these guys are about to Rewire that relationship.

An international line up of visual artists have created works which are now being interpreted sonically by audio artists. Effectively reversing the common record model where the artist creates an image to capture the mood of the music.

The visual works come from a curated line up of abstract urban artists. The audio artists have been selected from the vein of experimental electronic music.

Augustine Kofie x Moneyless – ASSIOMA

Assioma-Grftrsm-4-1024x682

With ASSIOMA Moneyless and Augustine Kofie meet at the Avantgarden Gallery to explore a new theory, finding together all the similarities and differences in their works, juxtaposing them. Moneyless takes care of building a solid foundation and Kofie begins a process of research combing Geometric and Hyperuranic Platonic perfection with the virus of reality. The work of Augustine Kofie therefore becomes one of the possible variables directly connected with Moneyless’ axiomatic purity.

Presenting VNA Issue 22

Very Nearly Almost is here with its twenty-second issue bursting full of interviews with some of the most talented artists from around the world. This issue features Vhils (Alexandre Farto) on the cover, an artist we have been desperate to feature in VNA for a while now. With a stunning street art technique, unlike anyone else in the world, it’s hard not to want to know more about the artist who actually chisels off plaster on walls to create images and portraits.

VNA 22 not only features the technical wizardry of Vhils but also the work of American 3D woodwork artist AJ Fosik who creates striking and unique pieces, as well as geometric madness from Moneyless. We’re also lucky enough to feature some great graffiti in this issue from the UK’s finest, Tizer fresh from his first London solo show and Soker from Bristol. Eager to cover the best of what we have to offer in Britain we also caught up with long time VNA friend Miss Led and took a visit to her studio to capture her at work. We also spoke to Vexta from Australia who is flying the flag for female artists everywhere, iconic imagery based Cryptik and American design extraordinaire Blaine Fontana. As if our pages weren’t bursting with enough colour we also spoke to Look from The Weird Crew, large scale Polish graffiti crew ETAM, Cranio from Brazil and illustrator Husk Mit Navn. We’ve got a street section jam-packed full of images from Copenhagen, Buenos Aires and London, products from The Candy Store and a great little selection of the latest books.

VNA 22 is available with two alternative covers; one is exclusive to our web store and subscribers, while the other is available through our network of stockists. Pre-orders will be available in our shop from 2pm GMT on Friday 12th April and will all come with a limited edition postcard, these will be sent out on Thursday 18th April.

We will be celebrating the release of this issue at The Outsiders gallery, Greek St on 18th April where drink will be provided by Desperados. Screen-printed copies of the magazine with artwork designed by Vhils will be available to buy in limited edition packs on the night, these will come with a screen printed envelope and four limited edition postcards. You will also be able to purchase both covers of the magazine and any back issues. Cash only.

Another 20 of these will be available through our online lottery for those unable to make the launch, please email LTD@verynearlyalmost.com before 6pm on 18th April to register your interest.
