Crowdfunding launch for ‘Happyland’

Melbourne artist Kaff-eine and her cheeseagle team are creating an onsite art installation as much-needed shelter with two slum communities in Manila, Philippines. A crowdfunding campaign to support the Happyland project launches with a group exhibition of leading street artists on 1 April.

Kaff-eine, whose artwork is found on the street, in private homes and in galleries, is reuniting with the Baseco and Happyland dumpsite communities and working with an international team to create ‘art tarpaulins’, which feature portraits of community personalities, and which will be used as much-needed shelter.

‘The collaborators who worked with me for my last project, Phoenix, made it clear that suitable housing is really important to them. I have so much admiration for the colourful, proud and resilient personalities in the communities; why not combine both?’, says Kaff-eine.

‘The Genuine Anti-Cool’ – Backwoods Gallery

Backwoods Gallery will be kicking off the 2015 calendar with a huge 5-year retrospective exhibition; ‘The Genuine Anti-Cool’ curated by Sean Carroll and featuring Backwoods artists.

The exhibition will also include some never before seen pieces. Featuring; Shun Kawakami, James Reka, Stabs, Miso, Ghostpatrol, Slicer, TwoOne, Shohei Otomo, Shohei Takasaki, Lush, Fred Fowler, Yusk Imai, Jun Inoue, Stephen Ives and Shida.

‘The Genuine Anti-Cool’ will be a unique insight into the current state of Australia’s maturing street art and urban contemporary scene. Backwoods Gallery will also be using the exhibition to present their latest book, ‘The Genuine Anti-Cool.’

Damo:  For the uninitiated, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Miso:  I’m so, so bad at answering this question!

Damo:  Can you tell us about your piece, and how you have responded to the artistic brief?

Miso:  Well, errr… I actually suggested the ‘hair’ idea to Alex, the curator, a while ago… and I think I found making the work actually a lot harder than any of the other artists, funny enough!  My hair is a bit of a bird’s nest, so I liked the idea of making a paper fold map of tangled hair, seeing how it got to that stage. A very clean map of something very messy.

Damo:  What medium have you used?  Why did you choose this medium?

Miso:  The work is a new experiment for me, making folded paper works – that are a little bit more sculptural.  The details are pin-pricks hammered into the paper, one by one, between the folds. It’s a medium I’ve been working with for a while now, and I really love the idea of drawing with nothingness – taking back from a blank sheet of paper, sculpting back – rather than adding on.

Damo:  Why did you agree to be part of the ‘Study Of’ project?  It is a very ambitious task – how do you think it will be viewed on completion?

Miso:  I suppose it’s really nice to be asked! It’s a very cool line-up to be a part of.  And it’s been a really, really great challenge – I think it’s a curatorial brief that made me make very different things, but work that I’m incredibly proud of – it’s not every day that a curator pushes you do that.

Damo:  On a more personal note, what can we expect to see from you in the next 18 months?

Miso:  Lots of publishing! More solo shows, and hopefully some architectural projects too.

‘A Study of Hair’ – Alexander Mitchell

This September, Backwoods Gallery is proud to present ‘A Study of Hair’, the third installment in what is to be a decade-long project.

The 2012 and 2013 exhibitions focused on two of the most important vectors of emotional communication: hands and eyes. This year’s theme, hair, is the most challenging of the series so far, and promises to generate an even more diverse range of interpretations.

This year’s artists will include C215, Dave Kinsey, Faith47, Inkie, Jonathan Guthmann, Mark Bode, Merda, Miso, ROA, Stephen Ives, Shohei Otomo, TwoOne, Usugrow, Yusk Imai and Alexander Mitchell.

In its completed form, the ‘A Study Of…’ project will document over 350 artworks from all corners of the globe. The curator’s (Alexander Mitchell) intent is to create an historical source with enough breadth to contextualize a generation of artists, many of whom work primarily outside the framework of established institutions.

Backwoods Interview – Alexander Mitchell

Backwoods Gallery, often referred to Australia’s best ‘street art’ gallery, sits in a quiet industrial back street of Collingwood (Victoria, Australia) at the end of a passageway just wide enough to fit a car. It is the stuff of art collectors’ dreams – regularly holding shows with artists from all over the globe.

Our man in Canberra, Damian Wardle, recently caught up with Backwoods Gallery driving force, Alexander Mitchell for an interview, here’s the latest word from the Melbourne studio.

Miso – Bright Night Sky

As a tattooist and street artist, working under the name MISO, Stanislava Pinchuk’s artwork spans the globe, on people and in cities everywhere.

After so many years traveling, Stanislava has resettled in her Melbourne studio and in a process of dreaming and mapping, Stanislava has begun retracing her life through delicate pinprick maps on white paper detailing the cities she has called home.
Hidden within each map are her memories, routines and experiences, as well as pathways leading to her friends houses across the world. Recently The National Gallery of Australia acquired two of her pinprick works, making Stanislava one of the youngest artists in the Australian national collection.

Bright Night Sky will be an exhibition of fourteen pinprick maps on paper and large installations by Stanislava on display at Backwoods Gallery, Melbourne.
