Katrin Fridriks Is Opening “New Wave” @ Circle Culture Gallery

After exhibiting at the Global Art Affairs Foundation at Palazzo Bembo Venice in the context of the Biennale di Venezia 2015, releasing a new limited edition screenprint with Lazarides and having her first monograph release scheduled for later in a year, Katrin Fridriks (featured in issue #26), is rounding up a successful year with a solo show “New Wave”. Opening on November 6th @ Circle Culture Gallery in Hamburg, this exhibition will include new works that continue her research on the relations between mass, speed and the distribution of energy.

Unique in both visual and technical aspect of her practice, Iceland-born conceptual artist is on the constant quest of finding new way to capture movement and energy in her abstract paintings. For this particular show she created a new body of square pieces that are focused on the law of gravity, using a newly developed technique of shooting the paint on the canvas at a certain speed and frequency. The result are vibrant works created used bright primary colors that applied on silver primed canvases give an illusion of paint levitating above the surface. These new works are result of artist’s strive to capture the creative force on canvas in similar manner she would execute a letter in one brush stroke when learning Japanese calligraphy years ago. More fluid and seemingly calmer than some of the previous works seen from the artist, the new pieces feel like they are about to continue their lava lamp movements, constantly changing shapes and playing with the observer’s eye. The show will be staying on view through February 26th so plenty of time for Fridriks’ fans to make their way to Hamburg and see it in person.

Experience Stendhal Syndrome With Katrin Fridriks @ Circleculture Gallery

Stendhal Syndrome or Florence syndrome is a psychosomatic condition caused by viewing certain artistic or historical artifacts, especially when the art is particularly beautiful or a large amount of art is in a single place. With that in mind, Icelandic artist Katrin Fridriks, named an entire series of works after this phenomenon, and finally, her current solo show @ Circle Culture gallery in Berlin. The landmark show opened on 21st of November and is one of her most significant projects to date by many accounts.

The significance of this event can be seen through the fact that this particular exhibition will be the core of Fridriks’ first monograph that’s gonna be released through Skira Publishing later this year. Focused on 13 years of creation & evolution of her distinctive style and technique, the book will be explaining and showing her work through pieces now showing in Berlin.

One of the main characteristics of Fridriks’ abstract paintings and conceptual installations are limitless ways of viewing the works. Her unique expressive technique that include thick layers of paint flowing and splattering over canvas, results in complex visuals that can be seen as a whole, but also, examined in almost limitless macro perspective. In order to present this sensation, the artist produced an interactive installation titled Perception of the Stendhal Syndrome vs. Gene&Ethics – Master Prism. Consisting of an over sized magnifying glass and a large canvas, this piece allows the observer to immerse into the artwork and experience it in a way that wasn’t possible before. This groundbreaking approach to presenting her work, secured Fridriks participation at the 56th Venice Biennale, so after closing of the show on 15th of February, this installation will be on view at the Palazzo Bembo in Venice.

Almost simultaneously, another piece from the show, Riding Awareness – Noble Eye-Catcher, will be shown at Reykjavik Art Museum as a part of a big group show titled Just painted (Contemporary Painting In Iceland). This historic exhibition will feature works by most important contemporary Icelandic artists, and Fridriks will be represented with this signature colorful installation, that is balancing between painting and sculptural work.

For the cover of VNA 26, we’ve returned to the UK to chat to a hugely influential artist and a bit of a personal hero of ours, Robert Del Naja, a character from the art world perhaps better known by his musical moniker; Massive Attack’s 3D. Featuring our first ever glitter screenprint, this is a milestone in VNA history and we’re pretty stoked with this collaboration with the Bristolian artist.

VNA 26 Release! – Online and in stores!

In VNA 26 we’ve managed to cram in large-scale muralists, fine art, graff writers who’ve transitioned to galleries, abstract art and even some skateboarding. From London and California, to New York and Penang by way of Bristol, we’ve scoured the world to bring you a mix of awesome artists we’ve just discovered alongside some of our old favourites who haven’t yet had their time to shine in VNA.

After our inaugural visit to Pow! Wow! Hawaii, we made the most of our contacts there, staying in touch with Augustine Kofie and going back to dig in the crates with Buff Monster. We’ve pulled out the stops to bring you some gallery talk with Jonathan LeVine, as well as crossing over to Australia to catch up with James Jirat Patradoon and Numskull.

We also feature 10101010101010101010, or Ten Ten for short, the mystical eastern styles of Calma, London-based print wizard, Aida, and US-artist, Greg Lamarche. To keep things fresh, we’ve also gone large with Lithuanian street painter Ernest Zacharevic and a little abstract too by chatting to Icelandic mark-maker, Katrin Fridriks.

The Lazarides team have put together their annual off-site exhibition, a sensory feast only suitable for the brave and forward thinking.

“BRUTAL explores the brutality of the times we live in, how this is reflected in the objects around us and our perception of the world. With a chilling new central London location for this year’s creative carnage, the roster of artists are set to produce their most brutal works to date, incorporating installation, sculpture and film bigger and bolder than ever before.”
