Da Mental Vaporz – ‘Residence’

On Saturday 30th April 2016, the Villa Alliv will open again its doors for its new exhibition “Residence”. JAW, KAN and BLO, three eminent members of graffiti crew DA MENTAL VAPORZ have spent two weeks in the villa, completely reinventing it.

Their works displayed during the exhibition are the result of a common work, carried out in situ. The exhibition will unveil six hand painting techniques, considered by the orgainsers to be a ‘a real pictorial blending.’

The artists have implemented no premeditated work techniques, assisting in fostering the effects of improvisation. Their instinctive and instantaneous method brings together surrealism, abstraction and image deconstruction.

Lek, Jaw & Kan showing “Amerouge” @ Galerie 42B

Lek, Kan & Jaw, members of the infamous DMV crew, recently had a 3 day exhibition/installation showing @ Galerie 42b in Paris. Opening on 18th of June, “Amerouge” featured works whose imagery was influenced by American culture and were all connected through warm red tones (rouge).
Very diverse in their styles and technique, the artists created a harmonious show which was united by the effective installation using red plastic wrap. Using only dots from a tip of his Squeezer pens, Kan created his tribute to American icons such as Bernie Dexter, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Haywoth. etc. In contrast to his meticulous work, Jaw’s painting include both massive paint splatters and delicate brush work. By layering these two techniques, he achieved the effect of damaged or aged motionless photographs or screenshots, perfectly matching the imagery of his crew mate. Finally, Lek’s complex geo abstraction pieces created with paint roller and brush are linking the works together in a subtle way, covering tones of other works and transforming them in an abstract form. Gris1 and Kan are opening “Humanity” in Geneve

Atelier des Bains gallery in Geneve will be opening two men show featuring Kan and Gris1 from Da Mental Vaporz crew (interviewed in issue #28). “Humanity” will include 5 new paintings of each of the artist, one collaborative piece as well as a piece painted on the wall of the gallery.

The theme of this body of work created exclusively for the show are human values and the ways everyday exposure to violence is influencing them. Through their distinctive style, French artists are depicting their vision of this phenomenon. Using fat markers Kan is dotting images taken from news channels, stripping them off details and creating pixelated screenshots of mainstream media imagery. Gris1 on another hand is combining different symbols, visual languages, mediums and techniques from urban and popular art, creating collages that form emotive images about the subject. The idea of exhibition is to invite the viewer to question the issue of violence that shapes up our humanity.
