POW! WOW! Hawaii 2017 Photo Round Up

After touring globe and beautifying the streets of eight different cities, contemporary art initiative POW! WOW! returned to its hometown in Oahu, Hawaii for its 2017 festivities. Taking place between February 11th and the 18th, artists headed over to the Kaka’ako neighbourhood to create a bunch of new murals and installations. As much as the festival is about art, it’s also about music, community and culture.

These images tell the story of the island life behind the murals, as well as showing some of the brightest and best artistic talent out there right now. Some images are from a trip to Papahana Kuaola, a non-profit organization in Waipao that provides aina based learning experiences focused on connecting the area’s past with a sustainable future.

THE DEEPEST DEPTHS OF THE BURROW – Nychos x Christian Fischer

THE DEEPEST DEPTHS OF THE BURROW – A Documentary about Lifestyle, Art and Subculture

Nychos is an illustrator, Urban Art- and Graffiti artist, who became known with his street concept RABBIT EYE MOVEMENT (REM) 10 years ago. The icon of the movement is a white rabbit, which has been breeding since then and has been popping up in the streets all over the globe for the past decade. This is exactly what Nychos thrives for – he travels the world to spread his art and his REM concept.

Within the last two years Nychos was accompanied by filmmaker Christian Fischer who recorded these journeys to create a full length movie. ‘The Deepest Depths Of The Burrow’ is a documentary about art, lifestyle and subculture. The movie captures the experiences of Nychos and other members of RABBIT EYE MOVEMENT within the last several years. Exceeding the Austrian scene, they flew from Berlin to San Francisco to Copenhagen to Hawaii and many more places to visit artists who all provide a unique view into their (street) culture – They lead Nychos through the streets of their home cities and show them the deepest depths of their burrows.

‘Travel to paint, paint to travel’ is the motto, which runs like a golden thread throughout the entire movie – words which capture the spirit of RABBIT EYE MOVEMENT. ‘The Deepest Depths Of The Burrow’ shows images which highlight the contrasts between Urban Art and Graffiti from various angles and captures the mutual passion for Urban Art in an unique way.

POW! WOW! x Tristan Eaton x Versace

To celebrate the opening of their new flagship in Hawaii, Versace worked with POW! WOW! to provide a large scale mural on one of the key arteries in Honolulu. Located on the intersection of Ala Moana Boulevard and Keawe Street, curator Jasper Wong brought in world-renowned street artist Tristan Eaton to create his own interpretation of the iconic Medusa. Painted over a period of five days, Tristan Eaton employed his unique aesthetics to create a masterpiece that encompasses elements of classic Versace patterns and a variety of textures and styles.

POW! WOW! Taiwan

Vince Ricafort put together this little teaser to get you moist for POW! WOW! Taiwan. In his own words he recounts his experience of the festival:

“I’m psyched to have been a part of POW! WOW! Hawaii for the last 4 years in Hawaii. We created this video with no budget, a lot of love, and a paycheck of unforgettable experiences. It’s been wild to see it grow and humbling to have so many talents gather in one place, even if it’s just for a moment. But there’s a lot that can happen in a week, and art has the power to move entire cities! Pow! Wow! has begun to travel, its next incarnation touching down in the city of Taipei on May 25, 2014.”
