Over The Desk – A VNA Book Review

Not something we usually do, and probably won’t get around to doing again for quite some time, but we thought we’d review some of the books that we’ve had spread over the desk acting as upmarket coasters for the past month.

It’s also probably the only time you’ll see publications about animal porn next to books that include the Vatican’s ltd edition record releases. Unless perhaps that sort of thing goes on at the Vatican when their librarian’s car isn’t being used to smuggle hundreds of kilos of illicit drugs. Who knows…

Now-retired Alife head honcho, Tony Arcabascio has stepped down from the pioneering clothing brand to concentrate on publishing. His latest focus is Swedish-born heavy-hitting monthly t-shirt zine, T-Post; a wearable magazine, with each ‘issue’ focusing on a different story or brand.

KARTEL – HAIFA

KARTEL is the brainchild of a local crew who have been pushing out Haifa’s young cultural scene for the past decade. Located next to the port in the city’s regenerating Downtown area, Kartel, a former industrial hangar, opened in mid August with Broken Fingaz’ Sex Picnic exhibition, followed by Klone ‘Second Nature’ at the last opening.

Kamea Hadar x Defer: Paradise Lost

During POW! WOW! Hawaii 2014, artists Kamea Hadar and Defer (K2S) collaborated on a mural that marked the start of a year-long series of collaborative walls, gallery shows and other creative projects between the two artists entitled “Paradise Lost”. The second installment of the series are two large-scale murals in San Francisco and a viewing of canvas pieces at First Amendment Gallery, San Francisco. The show at First Amendment Gallery opens Thursday August 7th, 2014.

POW! WOW! x Tristan Eaton x Versace

To celebrate the opening of their new flagship in Hawaii, Versace worked with POW! WOW! to provide a large scale mural on one of the key arteries in Honolulu. Located on the intersection of Ala Moana Boulevard and Keawe Street, curator Jasper Wong brought in world-renowned street artist Tristan Eaton to create his own interpretation of the iconic Medusa. Painted over a period of five days, Tristan Eaton employed his unique aesthetics to create a masterpiece that encompasses elements of classic Versace patterns and a variety of textures and styles.
