ARTURb 2015: when art-curators decide to become art-caretakers freedom opens all prison gates.

bosoletti (2)

ARTURb 2015’s edition took place again in Lagos, middle end of September. AKA CORLEONE, ALIAS, BOSOLETTI, MR WOODLAND and REGG were the artists invited to create pieces of art while based at an old prison.

VNA was invited to fully cover this edition. We arrived to Lagos on a Friday’s still warm, late night. The guys were finishing dinner at a tasca (typical Portuguese kind of bistro) the long table resonating with conversations’ sounds and laughter (and a little bit of booze, too). The organizers, Jorge Pereira, Maria João Alcobia and Nuno Pereira were sitting amongst the artists. No formal behaviors or ceremonial mannerisms at sight; the whole atmosphere was the one of a group of good friends having dinner. Quite uncommon for an artistic residence, we shared with Nuno Pereira:

NP (smiling):  Do you think so? Well, we prefer to see ourselves more as art-caretakers than as art-curators…

Remi Rough Studio Visit…

A couple of weeks ago, I got the opportunity to drop in to the studio of Mr Remi Rough.

Remi  (featured in VNA issue 18) has been involved in the London graffiti scene since the 1980’s and now as well as still being active in the mural scene he has carved a very successful art career with exhibitions in galleries in Paris, Perth, Tokyo, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hong Kong and more.

Nestled deep in South London’s Peckham/East Dulwich area, the studio was bustling with new work and a couple of older gems that where waiting to be taken to his new ‘Previously’ retrospective show at Morgan Furniture. This show is a little different as Remi explained as its a selection of older pieces ranging from 2009 – 2012 with some totally unseen work from that era.

The exhibition runs from the 11th -27th March Mon-Fri, 9.30-5.30

Morgan Showroom
1 Dallington Street, Clerkenwell,
London EC1V 0BH UK

Trafačka Comes To Shoreditch

The internationally recognised Praha based art collective, Trafačka, is coming to London in their Temple of Freedom exhibition on the 1st of May. Jodie visited their base earlier in the year and was hugely impressed by the level of creativity on show with every flat wall space covered with one design or another. After this it felt only right that we follow up the visit with an interview with their Artistic Manager and Producer, Blanka, and find out a little about the project and their coming show exhibition.

VNA at the Burning Ink Art Show in Istanbul in association with DC…

The guys from DC Shoes UK, very kindly invited VNA along to check out the closing party of the Istanbul “Burning Ink Art Show” held at Milk Gallery in the heart of the city.

For those of you who dont know, the Burning Ink events are a chance to buy a piece of original artwork, have it tattoo’d on your skin before the art is burnt and destroyed leaving only the tattoo as the only record of the artwork. Its a great concept that has now happened in various cities across the world including London, Paris andNew York…

This show in Istanbul pulled in some top artists from all over the world…

Ajay Bisset (UK), Clyde Barrow (UK), Dean 123klan (FR), Éloïse De Guglielmo (FR), Little Madi (FR), Marke Newton (UK), Frank Pellegrino (FR), Cristina Petrucci (UK), Pablo Iglesias (Es), Ilk (FR),Caroline Karénine (Fr), MMav (Fr), Amélie du Petit Thouars (FR), Jérémy Pradeilles (Fr), Prunelle (FR), Rorofrose (TU), Ilhan Bilir (Tu), Dramatik (Tu),Xghetto 666 (Mex), SSUR (Ru), Spoe (FR), Ramon San Miquel (Es), Chloé Trujillo (USA)
