NUART Festival in Stavanger, Norway kicks off a strong line up of panels and discussions today, starting off with the inaugural Pub Debate, headed up by team captains Evan Pricco, Editor in Chief at Juxtapoz, and writer Carlo McCormick, the two go head-to-head with artists Harmen de Hoop and Bortusk Leer to explore the subject: Should Art Have to Carry a Deeper Meaning?
We caught up with Aussie artist Anthony Lister back in Miami ahead of his show at Lazarides Rathbone, entitled Hurt People, Hurt People. Love or hate this loose cannon of creativity, he always has some interesting things to say about society at large. We chat about his arrest in Brisbane, freedom of visual speech and the World’s Longest Suicide Attempt.
VNA were invited to check out NUART Festival in Norway, apart from being rainy and £10-a-beer expensive, it was also pretty good. These are some of the shots from Henrik Haven and Butterfly of what went on (mainly because they’re heaps better photographers than any of the VNA team)
This years event featured a mostly Euro-centric line-up, including Andreco, Borondo, Fra.Biancoshock, Dotdotdot, Etam Cru, Icy & Sot, Levalet, Martin Whatson, Mathieu Tremblin, Strøk, Spy, Tilt, M-City, Maismenos and John Fekner, as well as a rad wonky Scandi-house collab from Liam Hayhow & Epifany.
Nuart Plus is the festivals annual series of academic and industry talks from some of the world leading artists, academic and industry professionals. A dynamic series of talks, presentations, workshops, panel debates, film screenings and more take place in the days before the exhibition opening. Previous guests have included Ron English, Swoon, Saber, Chris Stain, Dan Witz, Brad Downey, Logan Hicks and many more.
The events are recorded and made available on their website for research and educational purposes for free. The archive will be developed over the coming years into what they hope eventually gives an important historical insight into the life and times of Street Art. NUART 2014 : “BENEATH THE PAVING STONES, THE BEACH” This year’s Nuart Plus program will tackle the two ends of the street art-continuum, namely “safe murals” on the one hand and street art and activism on the other.
