‘Oh Bondage’ – detail – Alexander Mitchell

This September, Backwoods Gallery is proud to present ‘A Study of Hair’, the third installment in what is to be a decade-long project.

The 2012 and 2013 exhibitions focused on two of the most important vectors of emotional communication: hands and eyes. This year’s theme, hair, is the most challenging of the series so far, and promises to generate an even more diverse range of interpretations.

This year’s artists will include C215, Dave Kinsey, Faith47, Inkie, Jonathan Guthmann, Mark Bode, Merda, Miso, ROA, Stephen Ives, Shohei Otomo, TwoOne, Usugrow, Yusk Imai and Alexander Mitchell.

In its completed form, the ‘A Study Of…’ project will document over 350 artworks from all corners of the globe. The curator’s (Alexander Mitchell) intent is to create an historical source with enough breadth to contextualize a generation of artists, many of whom work primarily outside the framework of established institutions.

Damo managed to catch curator and contributor Alexander Mitchell for the down low…

cave_fin_bec1

The winery Cave Fin Bec in Switzerland recently introduced the results of their myFINBEC project for 2014. For the last few years they commission urban artists to paint 672 stacked wood wine crates, or 84 crates for each painting, which are then printed as wine labels for a special limited edition organic wine. This year, their list of artists include VHILS from Portugal, Herakut from Germany, C215 from France and Etam Cru from Poland.

The finished works will be available as separate cases of wine, but also, as a limited edition lithographs printed @ Idem, Paris. Before each of the eight paintings are taken apart, and cases are filled with six bottles of wine and sent to collectors, the finished works will go on a Wine European Tour. This tour is a series of four day pop-up shows held in street galleries, where art lovers will get an unique chance to see these works in person. Starting @ Ruttkowski;68 gallery in Cologne, the works will be exhibited from August 15th – August 17th,  and will than go to Rome, London, etc.

Cross Words

Steve Cross is a multi-talented artist, working across many mediums, including spraypaint, pencil and tattoos. Originally from Perth, Wild Western Australia, he now resides in Melbourne, where he co-runs Korpus Tattoo Studio. We caught up with the all-round b-boy for a chat about his murky past and inky fingers.

Tell us about your studio, Korpus…

Korpus was founded in 2007, in Brunswick, Melbourne. My good friend, Brian Graydon, and I came up with the concept of an art studio that would also run as a tattoo studio. We figured that if we exposed new images, ideas and concepts to people, we’d break away from that clichéd idea of what a tattoo and a tattoo studio should be. We hoped customers would respond with more of an open mind, which, in turn, would expand the possibilities of what they would want, and what we could illustrate on them. To start with, it was tough, as, initially, we learnt how to tattoo for 12 years, but now we were thrown into the business side of things. Five years on, we have great artists working with us, and we’ve had some amazing people come through. All the people who work, or have worked, at Korpus have been artists that Brian and I have looked up to and wanted to either nurture or learn from.

Postage & Subscription costs

This is just a little announcement to let you know we’ve had to slightly increase the shipping price of our magazines in line with rising costs! This has also impacted the cost of subscription packages but we hope you understand that we try our best to keep costs down and create an affordable publication for you, no matter where you live in the world.

Here is a piece of awesome art by C215 on a postbox to soften the blow.
