“Naughty but Nicer” Solo Exhibit at WALLWORKS Gallery In The Bronx, NY

Last weekend, WALLWORKS presented the gallery’s first solo exhibition from Nicer of TATS Cru entitled “Naughty but Nicer,” a pin-up inspired extravaganza from the graffiti legend. You’ll notice quickly from a few of the photos the rich attention to detail in the figures with layers of spray paint and tags in the background.  Nicer beautifully took the idea of the traditional “pin-up” updating it to reference today’s ideas of beauty.

Hector “Nicer” Nazario began painting in the graffiti era of New York City / The Bronx in the 1970’s and 80’s making huge contributions to the art form.  He is known well as a top graffiti legend and in 1996 joined two other artists (Bio and BG183, to make up the first graffiti company, TATS CRU.  Since then they have been continuing to show the universe the importance of graffiti working on countless gallery exhibits and big projects throughout NYC and worldwide.

TATS Cru – Studio Visit & Group Show

Taking the subway uptown to the boogie-down Bronx, we hit up the TATS Cru boys to check out their studio. It’s in the middle of a community centre; pretty fittingly for one of the longest-standing crews in graffiti, who also give a lot back to the neighbourhood they grew up in. The rougher edges have worn down a little, but a few blocks the wrong way and you could still be in trouble. New York City’s quick to remind you when you’ve put a foot down wrong… We caught up with BIO, Nicer and BG183 for a history lesson and an insight into their New York ahead of their latest group show – Blood, Sweat and Tears – at Toy Tokyo Underground in New York.

Daze – Studio Visit

Chris ‘Daze’ Ellis is something of a legend. Part and parcel of the wave of graffiti that reached out to a million youths all over the world through the medium of graffiti magazines, movies and books, he’s one man that can certainly walk the wall-talk. There’s not many interviews with anyone that’s picked up a spray-can where we don’t talk about Style Wars and Subway Art, so here’s a few words from a true school, humble pioneer.
