Swoon Presents… Pearly’s Beauty Shop

SWOON AND THE HELIOTROPE FOUNDATION PRESENT PEARLY’S BEAUTY SHOP: AN ARTIST-RUN SOIRÉE IN DOWNTOWN L.A. SATURDAY, MAY 21 | SUPERCHIEF GALLERY.

becghgdb

Pearly’s Beauty Shop, now in its fifth year, is unlike any event you’ve ever attended. Part exhibition, part live auction, part dance party, and part pop-up unisex beauty shop for which all stations are manned by artists. Want your nails did by a painter? Get your hair done in a diorama by a sculptor? Makeup by a conceptual artist? Performance-artist paraffin dip? No matter your aesthetic desire, Pearly’s has you covered… Artists will be partnered with salon technicians to recreate their designs; you’ll find salon stations throughout the party and revelry all around.

The Heliotrope Foundation, a nonprofit started by Brooklyn-based artist Swoon, helps communities respond and heal after natural disasters and other urgent social crises. Heliotrope works primarily with three initiatives:

– Braddock Tiles: a multi-tiered community arts project revitalizing the once-prosperous Rust Belt neighbuorhood of North Braddock, PA (2007 – present)

– New Orleans Airlift’s Music Box: a sonic playground, performance venue and laboratory for musical architecture and community engagement in New Orleans (2011 – present)

– The Konbit Shelter Project: a comprehensive and locally sustained community building project in post-‐ earthquake Haiti (2010 – present)

HOST COMMITTEE for the event includes: Swizz Beatz, Jane Golden, Sallyann Kluz, Andrew Lockhart, Karmimadeebora McMillan, Sandra Powell, Zahra Sherzad, Anthony Spiegel, Ryan Nuckel, KT Tierney, Natalie Kates, Bill Dunleavy, Edward Zipco, Marsea Goldberg, Als Kenny, Ryland Behrens, Tamara Goldstein, Lisa Shimamura, Andrew Edward Brown, Liat Cohen, JL Sirisuk, Raina Mehler, Alex Fanning, Afrodet Zuri, Andrea Fiona Pagliai Londoño, Siovan Hope Ross, Adam Lehrer, Kristin Sancken, Charlotte Reed, Kurt McVey.

For the past four years, Swoon has invited artists such as Shepard Fairey, Dustin Yellin and Maripol to each offer a limited edition print for Heliotrope to accessibly price at $50 in support of Braddock Tiles. For this year’s edition of Pearly’s, Swoon has tapped Juxtapoz publisher Evan Pricco to guest-‐curate a group of Los Angeles-‐based artists for an exclusive Pearly’s 2016 print release.

Braddock Tiles – NEW PRINTS!

swoonzara 1

New York-based artist, Swoon, also has a project called Braddock Tiles. Braddock will be a community based artisanal micro-factory located in a formerly abandoned church in North Braddock Pennsylvania whose first venture will be to hand produce the 20,000 beautifully colored ceramic tiles needed to give its landmark structure a new roof.

To help raise money for the project, they also release super affordable prints. This latest killer set includes work from Shepard Fairey, Molly Crabapple, Ricky Powell, Pablo Power, Shelter Serra, Kenzo Minami, Vexta and Swoon herself.

Swoon – Submerged Motherlands – Brooklyn Museum

Swoon’s latest installation opens to the public on April 11th. We headed over for a sneak preview of the biggest street art installation of the year. After months of sweat, headaches, doubtless countless tears, sheer exasperation and hours and days of preparation from Swoon and the team, this is what unfolded. I’m not sure Brooklyn Museum were quite ready for it…

VNA NYC Launch 2.0

So we had a little party in NYC last Thursday to celebrate the launch of Issue 25, with some limited edition, signed Swoon screen-printed copies of our latest lovely mag, with all profits from the sales going to Swoon’s Braddock Tiles project.

Our friends at Supra Footwear let us use their awesome NYC store in Manhattan, on Prince and Bowery, just round the corner from Maya Hayuk’s latest New York wall. Big ups to Chris Vidal and the rest of the Supra team for helping make this happen.

Sixpoint Brewery are bang into everything street-art and kindly gave us a load of their ‘Sweet Action’ Ale and ‘The Crisp’ Lager to keep everyone lubricated. It went down a storm and now we insist on Sixpoint beers wherever we go out drinking in NYC.

We had Miranda Maxwell on the decks spinning some classic hip hop beats to keep everybody moving too, you can catch her pumping up the jam at heaps of spots all over NYC.
