“Herakut’s Butterfly-Effect (tested on elephants)” mural. – Los Angeles, CA

“Remember kids: you are what you eat! Treat other people as you want to be treated. Don’t run with scissors! The second mouse gets the cheese. Employees must wash their hands. This is the rhythm of the night. John Snow knows nothing! (But maybe he is still alive).” -Herakut

Across the pond in Los Angeles,  the German duo Herakut just finished their latest mural and are gearing up for their show at the Corey Helford Gallery on Saturday March 26th. This home shopping network ad to sell you a butterfly shapewear suit to transform yourself from that ugly pug you are and into a beautiful butterfly. As always their loose yet hyper realistic style never ceases to amaze their fans as they can make a large painting of something that is usually the ugliest yet most adorable small dog, a pug, into a beautiful work of art. Even better when they take some inspiration off the Ron English elephant mural on the side of it. They titled the mural: “Herakut’s Butterfly-Effect (tested on elephants).”

“Noche de Calaveras” at Buckshot Gallery in Los Angeles, CA

_MG_5580

The newest addition to Los Angeles’ thriving art scene, Buckshot Gallery opened its doors in October with its star studded inaugural exhibition “Noche de Calaveras.” Co-founder and graffiti icon turned gallery owner RISK partnered with Kevin Zinger and Ivory Daniels from The Regime as well as local entrepreneurs Howard and Bryan Spunt to create a space in which artists could have the freedom to show works outside of their norm. “Noche de Calaveras” featured work from over thirty five iconic graffiti writers and artists in the form of mixed media skulls, prints, photographs, videos, and books.

The attendance was overwhelming and among this thriving crowd of art lovers were many of the exhibiting artists, including Van Styles, Vyal, Seen, Sel, Shark Toof, attending to sign books, chat about their pieces and lives. The overarching concept to bring together a large group of talented street artists was linked together by the presence of molded skulls. Some, like Slick’s “Death of Innocence” were transformed into otherworldly characters, and others, like RISK’s “Collateral Damage” and “Rorschach” were more classically painted on with aerosols, car paint, and filigree flawlessly emphasizing an object we perceive as mundane. SEEN took over an entire wall with his pieces, making homages to his NYC punk days with “Uncle Frank,” “Punked,” and “Grampa,” while juxtaposing it with a more contemporary color palette in “Colorveras.”

Exhibiting artists at “Noche de Calaveras” include: Risk, Seen, Tristan Eaton, Nathan Ota, Estevan Oriol, Slick, Andrew Hem, David Flores, Everlast, Evidence, O.G. Abel, Phil Frost, Saber, Sonny Boy, Van Styles, Aaron Thomas, Ariel Gold, Vyal, Axis, Ernie Cefalu, Franco Vescovi, Ariel Gold, Cookie, Meggs, Shark Toof, Steven Lippman, and more.

VIDEO: Berlin Kidz x Alaniz’s Message to Berlin on Gentrification

A few months ago when we were back in Berlin during Urban Nation we had a chance to go out on a mission with one of Berlin’s most prolific graffiti crews, the Berlin Kidz.  Take a look closer and you’ll see them abseiling down the wall to catch their tags. As that was going on Alaniz had his mile-high roller brush working on the middle finger from the ground. What’s crazy about this spot is Blu had buffed the entire wall black a few months prior to this as he didn’t like the real estate developers idea of having new condos that would have a great view of the local art hot spot. This was the message the Berlin Kidz and Alaniz had to say about that. Check out the time lapse and action photos shot by Birdman.

“Palace Costume” – Video and photo recap of mural with Miss Van, Victor Castillo, Dan Quintana and Esao Andrews in Los Angeles, CA.

Last month Barcelona based artist Miss Van came to visit sunny Los Angeles, CA and found a mysterious looking store on Fairfax Blvd. she wanted to paint. After a friendly exchange of words with Palace Costume, which is an old cinema costume shop usually closed to the public, she invited her friends over to paint the blank front walls. LA based artists Esao Andrews, Victor Castillo and Dan Quintana came to add their work that is usually seen on canvas so it was nice to see their work on a different medium. Once finished Dan, Esao, and Miss Van had a fun time exploring the inside of  the costume shop that lead to some hilarious photos on the roof top of the shop. Check out the video and photos by Birdman.

VNA25_launch party_LDN

For the cover of VNA 26, we’ve returned to the UK to chat to a hugely influential artist and a bit of a personal hero of ours, Robert Del Naja, a character from the art world perhaps better known by his musical moniker; Massive Attack’s 3D. Featuring our first ever glitter screenprint, this is a milestone in VNA history and we’re pretty stoked with this collaboration with the Bristolian artist.
