ALL GOOD THINGS

VNA_ALL GOOD THINGS_1200x1200 full

As the saying goes, ALL GOOD THINGS must come to an end and, after 10 amazing years, Very Nearly Almost Magazine is shutting up shop.

Finishing on a high that has seen the front cover graced by some of the brightest stars of the contemporary art world, including D*Face, Invader, Shepard Fairey, Futura, Swoon, Martha Cooper and more, the team behind VNA have made the difficult decision to draw this chapter to a close with an exhibition and forthcoming book.

In celebration of the incredible people that have made the magazine what it is, VNA are presenting their 10th Anniversary group show with some of the team’s favourite featured artists. 50+ artists make up this hand-picked selection of the world’s top talent, showing in one of East London’s longest-running contemporary urban art institutions, StolenSpace Gallery.

Showcasing work from all over the world, ‘ALL GOOD THINGS’ is comprised of original artworks, exclusive artist proofs and hand-finished prints from some of the leading international artists – artists who have helped shape the scene as we know it today. The VNA team has also assembled a tailored collection of some of the brightest new painters making waves across the globe.

The exhibition is all up for grabs, with artwork auctioned off on artFido and all proceeds from the auction sales donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. Bidding will begin at midday Thursday 27th April, closing at midnight on Sunday 30th April at:

www.artfido.com/vnamagazine

On the opening night, our VNA Newsstand will be bursting with back stock, including tees, stickers and other goodies – all at bargain prices. Hidden in amongst the stand, there will be a complete set of the VNA archive, from 1 to 35, available to buy from our private collection, including limited edition PP’s – strictly one archival item per person to keep things fair!

As with anything VNA-related, there will of course be a drink or two. Our friends at Sailor Jerry have kindly furnished us with a choice of delicious bespoke spiced rum cocktails and a deuce of their finest mixologists.

As if that wasn’t enough, we’ll be providing some of the lovely Soffle’s Pitta Chips to soak up some of the booze and giving away over a hundred free tacos from Luardos – served from Insa’s hand-painted taco truck.

The show opens for public viewing from 6-9pm Thursday 27th April and daily until the 30th April 11am-7pm at: StolenSpace Gallery, 17 Osborn St, London E1 6TD

Artists include:

45RPM, AJ FOSIK, ARYZ, BLEK LE RAT, C215, CAM SCALE, CHLOE EARLY, CONOR HARRINGTON, CYRCLE, D*FACE, DAN KITCHENER, DAVE WHITE, DAVID SHILLINGLAW, EELUS, EINE, ELK / LUKE CORNISH, ERMSY, FAILE, FINTAN MAGEE, GAIA, GEORGIA HILL, GHOSTPATROL (DAVID BOOTH), HERAKUT, INSA, INVADER, JAMES JEAN, JOE HOLBROOK, KID ACNE, LISTER, M-CITY / MARIUSZ WARAS, MOBSTR, MR JAGO, MYSTERIOUS AL, NIELS ‘SHOE’ MEULMANN, PAUL INSECT, REMI ROUGH, RONE, RONZO, RUFUS DAYGLO, SHEPARD FAIREY (OBEY), SICKBOY, STENDEC, STEVE CROSS, TOASTER, THE LONDON POLICE, TILT, TIZER, TODD FRANCIS, TOM FRENCH, TRISTAN EATON (TRUSTO CORP), VHILS, WILL BARRAS

Heerlen Murals – Photo Round-up – Henrik Haven

Henrik Haven has been kind enough to share his coverage of Heerlen Murals, which has been organising a wide range of interventions, murals and activities from August to December 2016 in and around the centre of Heerlen, Netherlands.

This year’s theme is called “There’s more than meets the eye” and it deals with the diversity and the ‘do-it-yourself’ mentality of the artform. The artist were challenged to produce work that have either a worldly or local context.

Recap: Rose Beton 2016

Rose Beton - 01

Toulouse Urban Culture Festival, Rose Beton, is rounding up its 2nd edition these days with Epoxy Exhibition @ Musée des Abattoirs closing its door on 28th of August.  This year the festival has decided to focus on graffiti as an artistic movement – from its beginnings in NYC back in the 70s to a global phenomenon that it is today.

In this manner, the festival included works by around 20 international artists with same graffiti origins but extremely different in their expression. From Futura’s signature abstraction to Boris Tellegen’s sharp futurism, Epoxy exhibition showed the variety of styles and visual languages that can evolve from classic graffiti. Along with works by these contemporary artists, Château d’Eau hosted a photography retrospective of Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant, presenting a flashback on how and where everything began.

Along with these indoors events, Open Summer Festival organized by 50cinq site invited muralists from around the world to leave their mark on the streets of the city. Supported by the Toulouse Town Hall, the city confirmed its status as an urban culture lab by adding new public works from Ben Eine, Reso, Honet, Aryz, Hendrik Beikirch and finally, Toulouse-born Miss Van. ARTURb: imprisonment is a beautiful way to free art on the streets.

This summer we chose Lagos for our holiday destination. We were looking for beautiful, quiet beaches,  nice hot stretches in the sun, cool places for drinks before dinner, and, yes, a little bit of buzz.  No more expectations.  The truth is we had much more than that: we ended up being struck by what we found on the city walls.

bezt

As you start to wander the alleys you literally bump into pieces from international artists such as ROA, BEZT, SAINER, ARYZ, SEPE, ONUR or BORONDO, to mention some, in addition to works from well known Portuguese ones as MÁRIO BELÉM, MAISMENOS, ADDFUEL, amongst others. It wouldn’t be as dazzling if we were in Berlin or Buenos Aires; the thing is it takes place in Lagos, a tiny spot on the Portuguese map, a small picturesque village. How the hell is this happening here?

Aryz Is Opening Paral-lel Solo Show in LA

aryz_parallel1

Almost precisely 2 years since his last solo show in San Francisco, Aryz is back in California, working on his LA debut show – Paral-lel. Our cover artist (issue #27), created a whole new body of work exclusively for this show, as a follow up to his most recent murals.

Transferring the beauty and rawness of sketch to a large scale, the artist is further exploring his distinctive style with this show, focusing on the imperfections and personal side of art. Paral-lel will consist of two separate show rooms, symbolizing two geodesic lines that never meet in the same plane. The first one will be exhibiting classic style paintings in which Spanish artist mixes academic painting along with contemporary techniques and mediums, while the other one will consist of high energy, expressive works. The artist who established himself as a respected muralist is rarely showing in galleries, so this unique event is expected to get a lot of attention from his fans and general audience.

WE AArt – Photoset

Henrik Haven, aka Henrik Lamar travelled to Aalborg (Denmark) to shoot some of the process at WE AArt – a public art event, featuring new murals by Aryz, Alexis Diaz, Escif, Liqen, Waone and AEC of Interesni Kazki, Franco Fasoli aka Jaz, Fintan Magee, Kenor and Don John. Here are some of the shots from the set up:

02. Aryz

Being one of the larger Danish cities, Aalborg deserves an interesting and inspiring urban space. The reality of today is that very little contemporary art enriches Aalborg – or the people living in it. Street art – public art – already exists in Denmark, and can be seen in particularly larger cities. WEAArt is, however, the first festival in Denmark to focus entirely on murals.

Vilnius Festival – Aryz & Tankpetrol Photoset

Henrik Haven popped over to Vilnius Street art festival to pap some of the walls over there, here’s a little round-up of some of what he saw…

2014-Vilnius,Lituania_original

Aryz

First time in Vilnius, Aryz has created a mural from the scratch, without any preparatory sketch. Initially the owners of the building, a public medical centre, expressed their wishes not to have any skeletons, skulls or cigarettes in the mural, since it might be offensive to their aging clientele. However, in the end Aryz signature skeletons appeared and the mural is now a hit with elderly ladies passing by to the medical centre.

Our cover artist, Aryz (pronounced ‘Arriz,’ for the record) is one of the youngest, most talented large-scale mural painters of his generation. He’s a total monster when it comes to the sheer size of his work, so we were stupidly excited when he agreed to do a cover feature.
