Stika – Phwoar Yeah

London-based artist, Josh Stika, aka Stika, has just opened his latest show in London’s Hoxton Hotel. Neon typography is in abundance, heavily influenced by lyrics from ’90s dance tunes. We got a few words from him about his career to date, the haters, ‘selling out’ and who he’d love to work with in the future.

VNA: So can you tell us a bit more about your new show, where, when, etc?

Stika: The exhibition is at The Hoxton Hotel, Shoreditch. It launches on the 19th of November is up for 3 months in the build up to the bespoke ‘Stika’ hotel room opening in late January.

As a solo show I aimed to make it as diverse as possible to ensure that anyone visiting doesn’t feel like they’re looking at the same piece/style 30 times over. I dabbled with the idea of a ‘group solo’ show – then I just realised this made it look like I had multiple-personality disorder so I let that one go…

Carbon – Sunday Round Up

Sunday was kinda struggle street, hanging out with Days, Steve Cross, Dboe and the Phable jeans guys on Saturday night took it’s toll after we blazed through the Adidas party. There were a bunch of internationals in the house, including the 1xRun guys from the States and the UK’s very own Insa, who seemed pretty happy to scribble in Martha Cooper’s black book…

Andrew Montell kicked off the days proceedings with an account of his student-style living during the formative years of Acclaim and the subsequent trials and errors in the production process. It was interesting to see how he refined the product and led on well to Jeff Hamada’s speech about appealing to markets. Hamada was funny, inspiring and brilliant, giving a great insight into his creative ideas and personality, which is probably one of the main reasons for www.booooooom.com’s huge success.

Eddie Huang’s presentation was lively, informed and political. He came through with a few resonating messages about people power and disarming corporations through the removal of support – i.e. voting with your feet. His intelligent voice cut through a lot of the fluff that surrounded some of the other speakers, even if it did get a little Black Panthers at times.

The final forum of the weekend included two of the most hotly anticipated guests of the weekend, Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant. The seminal duo were joined by Crack & Shine’s Will Robson-Scott. The photographic trio were a great finale for the event and Robson-Scott really held his own against Martha and Henry.

His talk was lively, amusing and socially critical – touching on themes of unfair jail time for graffiti writers and an interesting take on film vs. digital photography: “It’s like the vinyl versus cd debate…” he quipped, when Martha tried to put him in his place with her obvious experience and current preference for digital (most notably her recent instagram addiction).

All in, Andrew and the rest of the Carbon crew did an amazing job pulling in such a great line-up and putting on an awesome event. Massive respect and big ups to Bella, Edwina and the guys for all their hard work. Definitely one for the diary next year.

Carbon – Friday

Tonight marks the start of Carbon Festival in Melbourne. Kicking things into play for the weekend comes a special 30th Anniversary screening of seminal hip hop documentary, Style Wars – a movie that switched a world full of rebellious teenagers on to the expressive artform of graffiti.

Original documenters of the scene, Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant will be in attendance (if they’ve recovered from jetlag in time) to host a Q&A session on the movie. The screening, which itself is presented by Aussie paint brand, Ironlak, is exclusive to Carbon ticket holders.

The rest of the weekend encompasses a series of talks from the top independent creative minds from around the globe. Forums focus on four main areas of discussion:

Building a Brand, Contemporary Art & Design, New Media, Film & Photography

Other highlights include the Adidas’ Colliderscope on the Saturday – a chance for creatives to collide under the influence of music from Swick (Mad Decent) and visuals from Eness – and New Era are hosting a Sneaker Freaker swap meet on the Sunday.

Subtly straddling the boundaries between illustration, design, street artist or graffiti, Philth is uncategorizable. His work is haunting, yet endearing, strangely attractive to the senses; the heady mix of symbolism and alchemy present in his work is inspired by the art in science, Victorian paintings and woodblock printing.

Projects with Adidas, Snow Queen Vodka & China White projects have all popped up to pay the bills, but he prefers to spend his time collaborating with start-ups like Viva Sativa & UTC from grass roots level where he has more creative control and artistic integrity.

Australia’s premier contemporary style and culture event, CARBON festival, kicks off its third year of forums this April with a lineup of inspiring creative entrepreneurs and artists hand-picked from all over the world.

Speakers flying in from around the globe to share their stories of struggle and success include founder of the acclaimed streetwear brand, Stussy; the one and only Shawn Stussy, who, apparently, has spent the last 12 or so years surfing in Hawaii, as well as the recently-turned septuagenarian senator of street art reportage, Martha Cooper.

Joining the melee will be the best daredevil duo since Batman and Robin, Dabs & Myla, and www.booooooom.com creator, Jeff Hamada, as well as Aussie artist and one-man social glue factory, Mark Drew, graffiti powerhouse, Barry Mcgee, and a whole host of other amazing minds.

Our old favourites New Era’s Australian brothers and sisters will be getting down and Adidas are slinging some weight behind the organizers at Acclaim Magazine too, so it looks like a monster weekend in Melbourne is to be had.

Skel – Can you kick it?

Melissa ‘Skel’ Jaksic is a legend. She recently painted Oxford Art Factory alongside Shannon Crees, Alex Lehours, Anthony Lister and Sprinkles for the VNA launch in Sydney. Her creative projects include work for Absolut, Outpost, Paste Modernism and Secret Wars (now Secret Walls). She also helps run Ben Frost’s online print store, Stupid Krap, in her spare time. We caught her in between beers for a look at how she gets her kicks…

‘Skel’ means, basically, a bit of a lowlife, is that your persona as an artist, or your representation of what artists can be?

I got the nickname Skel from one of my crackhead friends back in my hometown. Because, at the time, I was a bit skinny and I guess they thought they were being crafty, seeing as I was Skeleton-like and it rhymed with Mel. It wasn’t until one of my friends linked me to the definition of Skel on Urban Dictionary that I saw it had all these alternate worldly meanings that, funnily enough, still applied to me as a person. I think everyone has the capacity to be a bit of a lowlife, and my work generally focuses on the darker side of people’s psyches, so I guess Skel is more a representation of what people can and sometimes want to be, but can’t because of societal pressures. The Dr. Jekyll to my Mr. Hyde I guess…

Its really nice to see big brands such as Adidas getting behind some UK street art/graffiti talent. Long may it continue…
