Outside the Box – Creature Creature

Outside the Box continues in Melbourne, each day up to four artists have exactly 8 hours to create a piece within the confinements of the gallery, utilising only the materials provided to them.

We have spoken to a few of the artists to get an idea of who they are, what makes them tick and an insight into their OTB piece. First up, Creature Creature.

Who are you and what do you do? Why art?

Our names are Ambrose and Chanel but we go under the artist name Creature Creature. When we met we were pretty inseparable and both equally passionate about art since we could hold a pencil. We soon decided to take our collaboration seriously and do all our art work under the one name that represents both of us. It has really pushed us individually and as a partnership.

Why ‘Outside the Box’? What does being involved in an event like this mean to you?

We were thrilled to be invited to such an event. It is a great concept and we believe restrictions allow creativity rather than hinder it. It’s also a great celebration of the Melbourne arts community, which we feel very lucky to be part of.

Can you tell us a little about your piece and the inspiration behind it’?

For our piece we decided to stick to our strengths which is drawing rather than trying to get crafty. It was still a challenge as we do not usually work on paper and so monochromatic. The image is furthering our exploration of balance, duality and the significance of the number two in our collaboration and art.

How has your practice changed over time? What has been the catalyst for this change?

We love experimenting with mediums and styles, and for our work to have some evolution and continuation of narrative. So we make an effort to change. The catalyst is inspiration. We try to keep educating ourselves in any information that interests us in the world and express this in our art. So it will always change as we keep learning.

What is your dream project?

We are massive foodies so would love to do packaging of some sort one day. Preferably beer or coffee. Our favourite indulgences.

If you could choose, what superpower would you have and why?

Ambrose: Teleporting, because of the freedom and experiences.
Chanel: Freeze Time, because time is the most valuable asset on the planet.
