Hi there, I’m Erin Smith…

For those of you who recently attended The Design Conference, you will already be familiar with Erin Smith and her amazing work after her keynote presentation and amazing show. For those of you who missed out, you are lucky, as she has kindly taken five with us to fill you in on everything Erin!

Who is Erin Smith?
Born in Ipswich 1981, I love milk, painting, people – and basically everything!

Can you tell us a bit about your art journey?
It’s been a long time chipping away – but I have zero complaints I’m really enjoying the journey. I can’t see it ever ending – well I can and I’ll swimming in a pool full of cash – I studied graphic design and really enjoyed that – then moved to a less commercial (nothing against that at all I just can’t keep to a brief) form of making work and making images that just seemed to feel right.

I’ve reached out to heaps of people and asked for lots of advice and definitely bugged many but I’ve tried to absorb everything and I am now getting shows in NYC, London and Australia which is really exciting.

What keeps you motivated to keep creating?
I think it just happens. I really enjoy people’s reactions to the work also. It’s kind a form of journal for my life. I look back now and think wow I remember how I was feeling when I made that work.

People keep me motivated – saying yes to certain things also keeps me maybe more so on time than motivated. But really I have wayy too much energy so motivation is not any problem.

What would you tell other creatives who are on the cusp of giving up?

Give yourself a minute – don’t be so hard on yourself. What do you achieve by giving up? Make something really different to what you normally do – pick up some charcoal or play on a computer or paint if that’s not your usual method of making – or make a song about how annoyed you are. But most of all just enjoy yourself and the fact we have the chance to be creative.

You’ve studied in some prestigious art schools. Do you think this is important as an artist to keep learning?
Oh for sure I think you can learn anywhere and from so many things but yes – keep learning !!!!

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Ooh… I’d like a farm maybe. Actually, no, I think I would be scared … I’ll definitely be painting and making work. I’d really like to have some big shows – I have a few ideas that I’d love to make reality so let’s say I hope I’ll be in a big space with a show that has all of the left over wrecks from a demolition derby…

Can you tell us something about yourself that we can’t find out using Google?
I’m not the Erin smith that makes collage stuff… That’s what comes up when you google Erin Smith.. But no, google knows all.

What’s your go to song when you need a pick me up?

What’s next for Erin Smith?
Hmmm I’m not really sure – things seem to pop up – I’m back in NYC next week to organise another show later this year, plus a show with grace in Toowoomba is in the works – as long as new eyes are getting to see my work and enjoying it I’m really happy!
